When I was attending elementary school in an extremely small south-western Ontario town, my friend Sheila transferred to a slightly-larger-but-still-small town in south-western Ontario for the eighth grade.
Her sister was attending high school in that town and somehow this made it possible for Sheila to escape. Neither of us fit in that super small town but, instead of uniting over our twinned sense of dislocation, we grew further apart where another pair of girls might have grown closer together.
After she transferred, Sheila had to read Louis Hémon’s novel for school and I did not; the only other book I remember her reading was an Agatha Christie novel, and she said that Maria Chapdelaine was boring beyond words. It seemed to take the entire year for the class to finish reading it.
A few decades later, this past October, I was thinking of Sheila when I picked up a Macmillan paperback edition of the classic at a college booksale. Inside the cover is a dedication, in a woman’s hand: “To our dear French student Jennifer. With love, Dad and Mom.”
Through the skinny paperback volume, Jennifer has marked the passages which do not appear in translation in her schoolgirl’s abridged edition. She marks them in parentheses: these are not the passages she needs to read and understand.
The other passages she marks with arrows, with thick grey triangles for heads, directing her attention. Sometimes she crosses out W.H. Blake’s translation and replaces a passage with a tidily printed (but clumsily translated) passage.
Somehow I can tell, whether by the vehemently coloured-in arrowheads or by the lazy loops in the fancy parenthetical marks, that Jennifer did not enjoy this classic novel about settler life in Quebec anymore than my friend Sheila.
I imagine Jennifer unwrapping the book, perhaps for a summer birthday during months when she knew what the texts would be for the following year but did not yet need to read them and I imagine her wishing that it was a Garfield cartoon book instead. (I make Jennifer the same age as Sheila and I: for no good reason.)
And how ironic, for there they were, schoolgirls reading this story of a young Quebecois woman who did not want to marry, who then wanted to marry, who then did not want to marry, who then was faced with the decision to leave the country she had come to know because she had not married, which all heads in a faintly Austenish direction.
For a man in possession of cleared acreage and some robust livestock in Quebec must be looking for a nice French girl. But Maria is barely of more importance than the livestock.
The main character here is the “menace lurking just outside the door – the cold – the shrouding snows – the blank solitude”. And, if we are to adopt a high school English teacher’s diagrams of triangles and arrows, the conflict is clear: man Vs nature. With a price to be paid. With “few women…fit for this”.
How do we find our way through “the great pitiless forest, and to hold in the midst of it all an ordered way of life, the gentleness and the joyousness which are the fruits of many a century sheltered from such rudeness – was it not surely a hard thing and a worthy? And the recompense? After death, a little word of praise.”
It is a story of endurance. But, then, the “marvel of the reappearing earth in the springtime after the long months of winter”.
For Sheila, it was certainly a hard thing, rather than a worthy one. And the fleeing appearance of spring was a poor occasion for praise.
But for a middle-aged reader, it was a darkly comforting story, which fit beautifully with one of my favourite reads of 2018, Songs for the Cold of Heart by Eric Dupont (2012; Trans. Peter McCambridge, 2018).
I’m glad to have read, at last, Louis Hémon’s classic novel. And I’m glad that I didn’t meet Maria when I was a younger reader, because I probably wouldn’t have been able to see the similarities in our trappednesses either.

I love your reflections on this book and your personal memories of it through your friend. It does sound more like a book that an older person would enjoy. I think it’s enlightening to read something you read as a teenage again as a 40-something. Perspective is everything.
I think they were probably trying to get in early with the whole Man Vs. Nature theme, but I think schools today turn to Gary Paulen’s Hatchet for that and it’s a much more riveting tale (and not only because it features a boy, and a barely-teenaged boy at that, IIRC). And I agree: perspective, perspective, perspective!
Yes, I’m like Lisa – I think really that I was a nerd! I just loved reading, and I loved analysing what I was reading. I’m always surprised by the vast numbers of people who say that school put them off reading. So, I understand why some English classes seem dumbed down to us – far better to keep people reading even if the works are a bit lighter and discussed more superficially than turn people off.
Anyhow, what I really wanted to say was that I’ve never heard of this book, which I suppose is not surprising. Canadian classics, like Aussie ones, haven’t travelled particularly far have they?
In the seventh grade, we read Steinbeck’s The Red Pony and Jack Schaefer’s Shane (apparently the key ideas were ‘horses’ and ‘frontier life’) which were, relatively speaking, much more action-packed. laughs
Not only is it unlikely that they would travel, but in this case it is a Francophone book, and most Anglophone readers in Canada – let alone other countries – don’t venture into reading Quebecois authors, not even the classics. So I’m not at all surprised you haven’t caught wind of it!

Have you been curious about Maria all these years, since learning that your friend thought it was boring beyond words? Or had you completely forgotten about it until you came across it at the book sale?
Even though I knew that a lot of classmates didn’t like other assigned reading that I loved (The Stone Angel, Moonfleet, Huckleberry Finn, etc.), I gave Sheila’s opinion more weight and decided to give it a wide berth, but I always planned to read it “someday”. (Plus it’s in Chapter Five or Six in Survival!)

Sometimes you just have to be the right age to read a book. Certainly there are books I get a lot more out of nowadays, and conversely books I can’t go back to, despite having tried. Lovely post!
It has a very slow start (I deliberately took it with me when I knew I had a half-hour wait to meet a train), lots of description, and every edition I’ve seen has a thin and fine font with narrow margins. As if it’s all crowded in for warmth!

I think it was an “important” book to read in terms of understanding how difficult it was for pioneering families to establish communities in extreme weather conditions in Quebec (and elsewhere), but obviously it overlooks a lot of history, too (for instance, the original inhabitants of the land).
I think this sounds like a lovely book, though I think I can see that it might not excite a young reader. How sad that your school friend didn’t much like reading, maybe they were just the wrong books. I am wondering whether Sheila came back to reading later in her life. I hope so.
She always had a single shelf of books in her room and she really did like the Agatha Christie mysteries (and what’s not to like!) and her mom always had a book on the go too. But, then, there wasn’t much to do, and only a few TV channels, so everyone read a little, right?
I think it’s so sad when young people leave school hating the books they’ve had to read. I don’t remember ever having that experience and I don’t know whether to conclude that I was lucky with my teachers or my book-loving parents, or just that I was a nerd.
I’m with you, Lisa. Part of my reason for reading this was the BookRiot reading challenge for this year, the category “assigned reading that I never read” and I had to use someone else’s assigned reading because I always read mine and, like you, always enjoyed it. contented shrug
