As the Read-A-Thon day unfolds, we’ll be including more than one update in a single refresh-able post.
We’re hoping to reduce the Reader Traffic for non-Read-A-Thon-ers.
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, Hour Three:
Title of book read: Pippi Longstocking (BIP read 114 pages of it)
Amount of time spent reading: 90 minutes (on the couch, it’s too cool on the porch)
Amount of time spent cheerleading: 120 minutes (by Mister BIP, posting and composing, at the table with the Furry One sleeping in a cushion in the middle of everything, within petting distance)
Other participants we’ve visited: 26
Summary, Hour Three:
Pippi is about to go to a coffee party and she’s already eaten pancakes. BIP is spending more time reading about other Read-A-Thoners’ reading than she is spending reading. Mister BIP is spending more time cheering than he is spending baking or making Read-A-Thon snacks. The world of mini-challenges and memes is a bookish entity all its own, both mysterious and inspiring
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, nearing Hour Five:
Amount of time spent looking for Cinnamon Bun recipe that we haven’t used since the holidays (thanks to Trish’s cinnamon bun chatter): 5 minutes
Title of book read since last update: Pippi Longstocking (BIP finished it, only book finished so far)
Pages read since last update: 44 pages (Total 158 pages)
Running total of time spent reading since last update: 25 minutes (Total 115 minutes)
Other participants we’ve visited: 5 new-to-BIP with various check-ins, whereas Mister BIP is adding new cheers as readers post updates.
Summary, nearing Hour Five:
Pippi spent a lot of time eating, which inspired the Second Snack, cranberry bread with cheese, served with coffee (Pippi’s bread was plain but she did eat a lot of treats for other meals).
BIP is still visiting more than she is reading, but she is about to choose her second book; Mister BIP has the dough rising, and the butter melting for the sugar icing and is posting pics of R-A-T-snack-ness here.
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, Hour Eight:
Time spent petting the Furry One and feeding the small critters of the neighbourhood: not enough, apparently
Third snack: Salted Crinkle Kettle Chips with Spicy-Black-Bean-Goat-Yogourt Dip (more of Mister BIP’s R-A-T-snacks)
Pages read since last update: 116 pages of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days read, on the porch, bundled in sweaters, dappled by sun (Total 274 pages)
Running total of time spent reading since last update: 90 minutes (Total 205 minutes)
Other participants we’ve visited: 6 new-to-BIP and some check-ins, Mister BIP still cheering
Cinnamon Buns Eaten (technically the Fourth snack): three, but two of them were so small they shouldn’t even count
Summary, Hour Eight:
Mister BIP has read two graphic novels, after prepping snacks and on a break from cheering. The Furry One got off her pillow briefly to supervise the cinnamon bun service, but her Read-A-Thon books remain untouched.
BIP should take a lesson from Phileas Fogg, who takes tea and toast at 8:23am and shaving-water at 9:37am and track her stats more exactly, which might encourage her to read more pages and eat fewer cinnamon buns; meantime, his exploratory spirit keeps the pages turning and inspire international flavours from Mister BIP’s spice rack.
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, Hour Eleven:
Fifth snack: Mister BIP’s homemade tomato sauce on buckwheat noodles (still eyeing the pan of remaining cinnamon buns)
Pages read since last update: 180, back on the couch, because the sun left the front porch behind (Total 454 pages, BIP)
Running total of time spent reading since last update: 120 (Total 325 minutes, BIP)
Books completed: 2 (Pippi and Phileas, BIP)
Loads of laundry done: 3
Other participants we’ve visited: 14 new-to-BIP and check-ins, Mister BIP is s-t-i-l-l cheerleading
Summary, Hour Eleven:
BIP’s Around the World in 80 Days felt like it took 80 days to read it; if it wasn’t for a challenge, it’d’ve gone back on the stack. But that’s two challenge books off the list: woot!
Mister BIP has started two more graphic novels and it seems like some of the people he’s been cheering are dropping off, or, else, just fiercely reading, so he expects to get a little more reading done in the second half.
The Furry One is irked by BIP’s regular prompts towards the stack of Feline Health books and it seems that she would never have signed up for a Read-A-Thon. A Nap-A-Thon, yes.
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, Hour Thirteen:
Sixth Snack: more cinnamon buns (of course)
Pages read since last update: 148 (Total 602, BIP)
Mostly sitting cross-legged on the hardwood floor, suddenly preferred to the couch
Running total of time spent reading since last update: 110 (Total 435 minutes, BIP)
Now reading: Juan Ramón Jiménez’s Platero and I (BIP)
Books completed: 2 (Pippi and Phileas, BIP)
Other participants we’ve visited: Mister BIP is cheering, but this session I only did check-ins (no exploring)
Summary, Hour Thirteen:
Mister BIP finished his third graphic novel and is portioning out a longer one that was slowing him down. He’s officially put in his 12-hours of cheerleading, so he can obsess a little less, though he still plans to check-in as long as we’re awake.
BIP was relieved to hang up her travelling gear having finished the Jules Verne novel and is revelling in the beautifully readable Platero and I, which will be finished in no time at this rate.
All the reading and thon-ing has disturbed the Furry One’s naps so much that she has relocated to another floor.
Update from BIP and Mister BIP, in Hour Fifteen:
Seventh Snack: fair-trade cocoa, with almond milk…so tasty (and did we say sweet?)
Pages read since last update: 64 (Total 666, BIP)
Books completed: 3 (Pippi and Phileas and Platero and no, BIP didn’t intend that alliterative achievement)
Running total of time spent reading since last update: 55 (Total 490 minutes, BIP)
Other participants we’ve visited: 4 new-to-BIP, Mister BIP is still cheering, urged on by his recent prize win
Summary, in Hour Fifteen:
Mister BIP is hoping that BIP doesn’t notice that he hasn’t touched a book since the last update; BIP is hoping that Mister BIP doesn’t notice how much she is yawning, already.
The Furry One is waiting for one of us to set foot in the kitchen to fix her a Nap-A-Thon snack (You get them for napping, right?)
Thanks for the additional encouragement, Melwyk and Cass. And thanks, too, Tanabata: I hope you managed to find something cinnamon to satisfy your craving. I caught it from Trisha myself. What fun!
Don’t let the late hour
Make you dour,
Just get up and stretch–
You’ll feel the best!
Okay, you’ve got to eat some cinnamon buns and read a bit more…you don’t want to get stuck at 666 pages, do you?
I loved reading your updates on what you’ve been reading, not reading, eating (important!) and who you’ve been cheering on so far. It sounds like you’re having a fabulous time, which is what it’s all about. I’m totally craving cinnamon buns now though, no thanks to you. Will have to scrounge in the kitchen and see what cinnamon things I can scrounge up.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day, and keep on read-a-thoning on!
Oh a poem….I’m so going to make that my next cheer for all the people that NEED me to cheer for them.
Thanks for all the comments: it really is inspiring to have company on an endeavour like this. Great quote, Cass, and thanks for stopping by again. I agree, Kim, that following others’ progress can take a bite out of your own, but not to worry, Kinna, we’re definitely still having fun! She’s terrific, isn’t she, Notorious? I wish I’d read her as a girl because I’m sure it’s a book that I would have re-read to excess. Yup, cheering is a little overwhelming for a quiet, retiring bookish girl, but you’re a natural, Mister BIP. (And I love your outfit.) Thanks, Jen, for the encouragement and for your second visit. And yes, Melwyk, it seems like she’s eating all the time, everything from cookies to cakes and proper food, too, unlike Anne, who spent more time imagining things I guess. Terrific poem, Erin: thanks for sharing it here!
Happy Read-A-Thon-ing to all of you!
I’ve traveled the world twice over,
Met the famous; saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners,
I’ve been where no-one’s been before,
Learned secrets from writers and cooks
All with one library ticket
To the wonderful world of books.

I hope you’re enjoying your reading, wherever it’s taking you!!
I had a few golden hrs on the porch as well but am now tucked up inside again. Taking a little time off this hour to eat a proper meal and to check in on everyone else for a change 😉 Looks like you’ve been doing fine; those cinnamon buns are amazing. Mmmmm. Pippi does eat a lot, doesn’t she?
Looks like you both have been doing great! Keep having fun!
Who’da thunk cheer-leading would be so intense! heheh Going to start on my next kitchen project soon. It’s going to be scary! ::grin::
I love Pippi! Happy Reading!
Your snacks will taste good, I’m sure. Enjoy reading, more than the cheering! 🙂 But have fun too.
It’s so easy to get sucked into the cheering and Twitter and reading other progress and then not make any of your own. Glad you’re making some 🙂 Cranberry bread with cheese sounds delicious! Jenny and I are just sitting down to lunch ourselves. Happy Read-a-Thon!

Enjoy your trips!!
